Its possible the laptop has one of the viruses that disables access to the internet to prevent you from downloading a solution. I don't know much about fixing that, maybe load an up to date virus scanner on the laptop via a usb key. Also try using ping or better yet tracert on google.

If you do get infected, especially with a bogus AV virus that disables your virus scan I found the easiest was to remove it is to remove the drive. On a second PC, make sure the AV software is up to date then use a hard drive to usb adapter to connect the infected drive. You'll then be able to scan the drive and remove the infected files. I have one of these, supports IDE, SATA and laptop ...
