I was in Rome in Feb this year and decided to take one of the tours of the Coloseum because we wanted to see if the "no lines" worked. It worked there and we liked the tour guide so much that we organised to go on the same guy's walking tour around Rome AND his guided tour through the Vatican museums and St Peter's (although had attended Mass at St Peter's already). We managed to skip the ...

Hi Raven, I just returned from Rome in May. I booked a tour directly through the Vatican(group tour, but I was solo). There were about ten in the group and our guide was great. It took about three hours and I believe the cost was 29 euros. Personally, I wouldn't bother with an expensive after-hours tour, I got to see everything. Tour ended in the sistine chapel and then I went into St. Peter's ...

If you go on your own, there are some very good FREE MP3 guides in the Rick Steves Web site for Rome, Florence, and Venice. Just download to an ipod type player and take along. And don't forget your charger. Can also download a map of these museums. I have read in many guidebooks that the best time to go for short lines is early afternoon - about 12:30pm. Or get a guided ...

Hi kob, You have 3 threads about your Italy trip. Click on your screen name at the top to see all your posts and responses. It would help if you said where in Italy you want to go. Cities, countryside, seaside, etc. And how long your trip will be. What is your family interested in - museums, churches, food, scenery, lakes, mountains. Identifying these things will help you to determine ...

Hi Everyone, We made it back from Europe with no problems. I think I'm finally back into the swing of things! We had a great time. Here's my take on the Europe's Highlights tour. We flew into London a day early so we arrived on Friday morning. We had Cosmos arrange for the airport transfer to the hotel. If anyone has dot2dot shuttles pick them up look for the desk around the ...

Hello. I have two guided tours coming up in Rome and I'm not sure how much to tip. The first is Helen's after-hours tour of the Vatican Museums. The cost for this tour is 250 euro...quite expensive. What would an appropriate tip be? I would think it would be a fixed amount and not a percentage given how much we are paying for this tour. The other is a private guide taking six of us on a ...

Viajero - I find you post confusing and somewhat misleading. You make it seem as if there are multiple museums. There is the Vatican Museum with only one entrance that has multiple rooms housing different types of art. Most museums are set up in a similar fashion (have you been to the Louvre?). The average Vatican Museum tours booked through outside tour companies only last about two hours. It ...

I found your dissemination fascinating. What really cracks me up is the ads at the end of each thread. for example: Paint the Sistine Chapel Become Another Michelangelo! Blick Art Materials. We Sell Online www.DickBlick.comGuided Tours of Vatican Private & small parties in English, no lines with priority entrance I wonder what Michelangelo, Pope Julius, or ...

Two years ago, FI and I spent two weeks in Italy in June. Here's what I recommend: 2-3 days in Rome Vatican is a full day adventure. Don't pay the money for the guided tours- the guides are difficult to understand and the groups are too large to really hear anything. Additionally, you have to go at their pace, not your own. When we got to the Sistine Chapel, we abandoned the guide ...

I have read many interesting posts from Fodorites who have taken tours of the Vatican (conducted by the Vatican or by outside tour companies). Almost without fail posters mention somewhere in their report that they booked a tour because it enabled them to skip the long queues to get into the Vatican Museums. I appreciate that tours often impart valuable knowledge that is hard to obtain in ...

Hi All, I've been planning my first trip to Rome and doing a whole lot of lurking here, but little posting. You all have been so very helpful to my trip without knowing it at all! So, we're leaving on Sunday from MPLS to Rome! I am getting excited and nervous, like all trips. The apartment is rented, the flight is booked, the dogs have a reservation at the kennel, I even know where my...

I will say that even in December, the line to get into the Vatican museums was extremely long. Of course it all depends on what time of day you get there, but don't assume that winter time means no lines. I would book any needed reservations for the Vatican now. You should email the rental agency about washcloths, since they could vary from apt to apt. Ours near Campo dei Fiori had no ...
