When I bought my car (used) it had the air bag light on. The guy who sold it to me told me it just needed the code cleared. I got a vag-com and read the code, it was driver side ignitor high resistance (or something like that). I cleared the code and have not seen it since, that was 2 years ago. Be carefull though, the early model airbag controllers can be screwed up by scanning them.

Try an older version of vagcom. Used to be able to connect w/o a problem, and with the newer versions they have some procedure where you shut the car off for 30 seconds, and then key on again before it will connect. I have an airbag light, but it won't pull a code with the new versions. I need to get around to trying the old version myself.

Four years later update on my airbags experiences... Biggest update in past 4 years is that I've had good success with having the blown airbag control module reset by myairbags.com. Beauty of sending your module in for reset is that you can plug it in and the airbag light MIL goes off (of course airbags and seat belts replaced before then). No need for a VAGCOM or to talk to the computers ...
