Back when I was in grad school, I house sat for one of my professors every summer. They had a beautiful old colonial house. In the living room, the fireplace was centered on an interior wall. They placed a low, round coffee table in front of the fireplace, with a low-backed upholstered chair on either side of the table slightly angled in towards the table. Both chairs were facing into the room, ...

Oct 27 Challenge: Kitchen counters. I know this will be a big one for many mamas, but the pleasure of clear, horizontal space is a great way to begin & very worth the effort... So, take everything off of your counter/island. Make the counters & back-splash look fresh & clean (for some this will be a simple wipe-down, others may need to do a little scrubbing.) As you place things back on...

July 2003. After more than two years of suffocating plaster dust, thumping hammers, and hard-hat traffic jams at Nathaniel Rothschild's New York town house, 100 or so friends flock to the West Village for cocktails and exquisitely rendered canapés to see what Nat's done with the place. The furniture is shrink-wrapped in plastic and draped with drop cloths. Actually, the house isn't quite finished...

Multimedia beds have succeeded in turning more than a few heads in the past. No doubt, these high-tech luxury beds will ask you for some huge bucks in exchange for a blissful sleep, but can you really put a price tag on a good nights sleep? Multimedia beds have evolved into one of the most important pieces of furniture in any home and are here to stay as people are getting increasingly ...

WOW!! I just found this site & wish I'd been guided here sooner! Deb, you in particular struck a nerve as I AM in Sun City CA & my eldest sister is in Colorado (Olathe)! First I want to say you all are amazing & it's truly a testament to your parents that you do so much for them. I tend to get long-winded when I type so please forgive me in advance. This whole posting...

I use fake greenery in the high places to soften the space i.e. above my built in cabinets to each side of my brick fireplace, with a couple of baskets AND above my entrance door in a window. I also have a few silk flower arrangements i.e. A big one that sits on top of my wall unit in my living room - again to soften the hard lines of the wood. I bring silk flower ...
