You can stop by the post office to pick up a moving packet (change of address packet) which will have multiple rental trucks/trailer coupons.

Greetings from Central AZ! I have an '04 Tacoma dbl. cab 4x4 SR5 TRD 3.4V6 A/T. It is completely stock except for a self-installed hitch receiver (Uhaul brand, I like the way it tucks up tight behind the bumper), and the "ground the gray wire" mod to the diff lock ECU allowing it to be engaged in H2 or H4. But the extended warranty has expired, and it will be paid off soon, so I am feeling it ...

How about this put an ad on Craig's list trying to find someone moving cross country with a U-haul that neds an extra driver. Go to the ride boards at local colleges to see if people are heading to California in a truck. Hitchhike LOL. You shuld be able to find a trailer sometimes you can pick them up for free by walking ...

When I lived in Ohio, the Uhaul store actually rented out horse trailers. They were pretty cheap, but it was a huge, huge store. They also rented out RV's (the big suckers, like semi sized) as well. I don't know if that would help in your area, but you could give it a try.
