it is called pig tailing and as far as it being against code well that depends on were you are . but there is a wire nut just for this task not your standard nut that screws onto the wire . it is like a washer , thick , with a bolt in the side to fasten the wire together . now you need to use 110 wire for this . the nut then has a plastic fitting to go over it . id suggest you use electrical tape...
