I can answer for the telecommunications industry. The job still exists but the numbers are dwindling. All those lines are being replaced by fiber and underground cable. Then there's the microwave, radio, satellite, and fiber used for the longhauls. Very few linemen there too. If that's what you really want to do, find a rural telco without the resources to upgrade.
