My 2000 outback recently had the same problem, or what I think is the same problem. The last time the oil was changed, oil was spilled on the skid plate (I think it's the skid plate...anyway, the plastic thing under the front) and it was dripping onto the exhaust and making a very tiny slightly burning rubber/plastic smell. I couldn't figure out where it was coming from, sometimes...

I've got the oilskin Kodiak. It's a super rain hat. I've had it for over ten years and just last spring I applied some kind of refinisher to it (can't recall the name). And man, did that oilskin hat ever smell like oil. Literally, it smelled like petroleum. But after a time or two in the rain the smell went away. I LOVE your car...if I was in the market for a new car, I would absolutely buy a Turbo Forester. But, I have a 2006 Outback VDC...my husband says..."no way are you getting a new car!" Oh well, I do like my Outback, I just like yours better.
