I have recently bought a new home which was built 13 years ago. I noticed when bleeding two of the radiators there is a black oily substance that comes out of the bleed valve. Advice has been to drain down the system, flush and refill using a good corroision inhibitor. What is the best approach? Should I; 1 - buy some type of commercial product for cleaning the ...

Personally I would suggest first using a system cleaner such as Fernox DS40, this will loosen sludge, etc. Then flush the system until the water runs clear, removing each radiator and flushing is prob not necessary, but will not do any harm and will speed up the flushing process. Then make sure you add an inhibitor at the correct concentration, such as Fernox MB-1 or F1. For all new ...

Get it powerflushed. Removal of rads etc will clear the sludge from inside them, but leave it in pipes etc It's more problem in a pipe, where it can cause blockages. I've dealt with two for friends and they were a nightmare to do.
