30 carbine is probably the lightest. Their are pictures of guys hunting bear with it back in the day, so it is adequate. It is underpowered by today's standards, but in SHTF it would work and the cartridge is quite light. EDIT: read the post again, I am not so sure about the 150 yard deal with the 30 carbine. I see 223 as having similar limitations. Interesting question when you start ...

The M1 Carbine is a great SHTF gun. Easy to handle, shoot, and transport. Everybody can have fun with the Carbine, it's almost like a .22, but with a serious punch and little recoil. During Hurricane Ike last year I had three magazines loaded - one where it counts, and the other two on the cool pouch that fits on the stock. Very good up to 100 yards. My Garand shoots just as well at 200 yards as...
