Seeing a Pitched Battle Over Plastic Bags [NYT] By MIREYA NAVARRO Steven Thrasher usually carries two reusable cloth bags for any impromptu shopping. At the Ikea store in Brooklyn the other day, he gladly forked over $1.18 for two of the store’s big blue bags, made of durable plastic for repeated use. But even an environmentally aware New Yorker like Mr. Thrasher cannot shake himself ...

Recs: 1 OT- Frederick Taylor's Revenge The checkout jobs were already crappy and poorly-paid, but they have to make them worse. I've noticed the girls work faster when the lines get longer- fine. But when they are short, who the hell cares? And they ascribe no value to talking with the help or helping out the old folks. That is insane. Numbers don't tell the story. ...

It's a scam. Please do not deposit that into your account! I don't know of any mystery shopping companies that pay that much. Usually with the scam they want you to take out your money, do some "mystery shopping" and then send them the leftover money. http://scammo.blogspot.com/2008/06/monday_23.html Tips to avoid being trapped A legitimate mystery shopping company does not ...

you would pay tax on the $10. All the stores do it the same ( Superstore, Walmart, etc) because the government still wants all the tax! However, if it's an actual Free Product Coupon and not just a coupon that "makes" the product free, you should not have to pay tax on it. (But Walmart and sometimes Shoppers/Zellers still charge tax, Walmart because that's the way their computer system is)

The author is someone who's been insightful, knowledgeable and consistently right with respect to the issue of north Corea. Quote: “I shouldn’t have to start each Christmas morning with a needle nose pliers and wire cutters,” said Jeffrey P. Bezos, the father of four young children and founder of Amazon.com. “But that is what I do, I arm myself, and it still takes me 10 minutes to open each package.” This month, Mr. Bezos pledged to lead the charge into a new era of nonhostile ...

Just as kerrylj stated, it "should" state on the coupon whether the taxes are to be paid by the customer or not. IF it DOES NOT state whether taxes are to be paid by customer, it is generally store policy to charge the taxes. Although there were Glade coupons sent in the mail about 3 months ago, which glade paid the pst, but customer still had to pay the gst. I did have to tell the cashier ...

I went to a juried show at the high school last Saturday. Charge was $3 (same as usual) and $2 for seniors. It was packed with crafters and shoppers. Economy here is as bad as MI but this craft show was not an example of that.

I agree that the problem is on demand side. American consumers seem to be inherently lazy - I admit to it myself. I own several reusable shopping bags but never really remember to use them. It's already standard to charge for plastic bags in Europe and Asia, where you see almost all shoppers bring their own bags. I think charging 15-25 cents per plastic bag will give consumers the extra kick to ...
