I am stumped! I can't figure out how to take apart my Gibb 28 self tailing secondarys to (Finally! Yeah!) paint my deck. The spiral clip just holds the top crown on. No allen screw down the middle like others. Is the arm a nut? I am really hesitant to wack it! I am taking portlight frames and hatches for re-hardcoat anodize...Thought I would throw the winches in as well. I would doubt the re-...

If you both share the premise that you are truly equal in every aspect of your lives and both agree that you share lifes duties equitably, then there shouldn't be strife when faced with a decision. You should each be able to suggest a course of action then mutually agree on which is best under the circumstances. And then, you should both act in support of the mutual decision. On boats it is ...

I am giving in and putting in self-tailing winches on my boat. We are usually just two of us in the boat, and I believe the self tailing will greatly improve our quality of life. My old winch is a Lewmar 40. I want to replace them for Harken 40s. Why Harken ? I have a friend who is a distributor and has offered to give them to me at cost. 1) I have a couple of questions. Can ...

I'm considering replacing my Barient 25's for self tailing winches . I'm a bit confused about what I should be considering. I'm looking at the Harken 44.2's or the 46.2's. I'm also looking at Lewmar 44ST's. Does anyone have experience with either and have a opinion of the better of the two? The boat is a Swift 40 Ketch with Genoa Sail Area of 444 SQ FT. I believe the 25's are a ...

I didn't document much when I was doing the rebuild but here are some before and after pictures. The smaller one is 12.5:1 and the larger is 16.5:1. Even so, on a closehaul the larger ones really take some hard cranking to get the genny in. They are all cast aluminum except for the gears, pawls and bearings, of course. They are ROM's made in Japan. I've searched for the manufacture ...

FWIW, I was informed by a knowledgeable source that Lewmar does not support their older model or series winches when they come out with a newer one, such as the current Ocean Series winches . Thus, it can be difficult to find replacement parts for and older winch . I found this out while trying to find a replacement lower pawl gear when overhauling a friends older model winches he...

Nordic Cat, You seem so adamanet on attacking the integrity of these boats. You fail to want to recognize ANY of the positive remarks and records that have been recorded here on this thread, from references to published writings in established multihull publications to first hand experience from real life owners. You've got over 560 posts since you've joined here in Jan 08 which makes me ...

They do but the purpose of them is to hold the line after you run the line tight. They do not strip the line as you winch the line in. You still have to do that like you do now. They sell them and often indicate they convert a non self tailing winch. It's still may be something you might want to do if you understand what they can do and can't do. They are basically rubber rings with a slot for ...
