But the raptors could've just ripped his arm off and he somehow got away. So he's been living on Isla Sorna (or Nublar, I forget) since 1993 and is now a wildman. It's kind of like the jump that Peter Jackson took. No one thought he could do it, or do it properly or do it justice. But when you look at Heavenly Creatures you can see the spark or whatever you want to call it that kind of tells you he was capable of making that jump.
