While not all that relevant, another way is the system it's for. For example, Pocket Monsters Pikachu/Pokémon Yellow is a Game Boy game, and therefore comes in that kind of cartridge -- however, if it comes in a GBA one then it'd be obvious that it's a fake. I never got into Pokemon, but friends tell me it would be right up my alley if it didn't look so kiddy. They said if I can get over that I'd probably love it though. I love the whole raise monsters to fight for you thing.
