If no one put a BIOS password on your computer then you have hardware failure. The symptoms you describe in the body of your post tend to support that. Encrypting is the easiest way but has potential problems too. If the file table or data for the encryption becomes corrupt you will not be able to access that data. So as suggested do off machine backups of  your data. Encrypt that too though for security. You may want to consider using an online backup service too that encrypts your data. Carbonnite.com is the best.
