The filter is sold in a Purolator box but it is the same filter (HU718/5) that the dealer sells (for $18 including tax) only difference is Mercedes is printed on one and not ...

Hold on sparky!!!!! The Purolator filter has a paper element. The M/B (Mann) is the "proper" ( read: MB warranty friendly ) fleece element. I suggest checking out Ebay for the proper "Fleece" Mann filters as these are intended to be used on our vehicles.

It was actually pretty dark when I checked it and drained it. I am a hard driver maybe that's why, but it is cheap insurance IMO...just a personal thing I guess.

FWIW, the 01 S4 I had as a company car has over 255k miles on it's stock fluid. That stuff can last damn near forever. The synthetics are even better so don't worry about it unless there is a leak.

I don't know if anyone recalls on this forum, but the idea of additives/additive replentishment from the oil filter is not new. Monroe (Primarily known as a manufacturer of shock absorbers) had in oil filter line in the late 70's that claimed to replentish additives.

In my opinion, If you idle for a couple of minutes, and drive calmly for a bit, the Mobil 1 full synthetic oil is giving you all the protection you need. You are not on the track-for normal driving a s=few minutes warmup and a bit of initial calm driving should be perfectly fine............................ This...
