Hello, I was diagnosed type 2 last week. Last friday my BG was 375. I have been taking Metformin ER 500 once per day for the last seven days. I have seen no improvement. My BG today is 367. I feel terrible. I have no energy, all I do is sleep. I have vomited and feel nauseus. When I walk to the bathroom and back I am out of breath. I don't think I can continue like this without some releif. ...

I currently take Metformin *ER* 500 mg, one tablet at night. About one hour after taking the pill, I get cramps in my toes. Not every night but almost. Should I stop taking Metformin?

I have been to see my doctor, who suggested that all these drug are actually the same thing. How can that be? I had asked about an extended release form of metformin, as my fbgs aren't too bad when I take the regular metformin late at night and then get up early. The effect of Metformin and Metformin ER is quite different even though the key ingredient is the same.Metformin reachs peak at approx 4 hours after popping the pill and is gone after approx 8 hours.Metformin ER peaks at 6 hours and supposedly lasts up to 24 hours( but in a very weakened state). One reason doctors prescribe combination drugs is that they get a lot of pressure from pharmaceutical reps to prescribe them. The combination drugs are not generic, where sometimes one or more of the individual drugs are. $$$, that's at least partly why.
