1998 Ford Ranger Manual Transmission problem.?

The first time I noticed any problem was when I was on the freeway. I gave it some gas to pass a car but I did not downshift. The engine rpms climbed but my speed did not increase and I was on level ground. Also, when I shift and left out the clutch when it is in gear the truck sputers and acts like its going to die.
