Exercise balls for the win. I came out with a sore (in a good way) set of glutes from bouncing on it while playing Warhammer. Try putting your feet together, then holding yourself up over the ball so that you're barely sit on it, using your glutes and pulling in your abs. Welcome to Halloween USA. Would you like to hear about our spooktacular sales?

Swimming in general is a great excercise.  It combines resistance and cardio together.  I think your idea of changing your workout when you don't feel up to your usual is a good idea.  One or two days a month of not working glutes will likely not hurt your progress.  If the alternative is swimming, or not working out, go for swimming.
