That's odd. Try ctrl alt del to stop it. Also this is a utility that scans your system for needed Intel drivers. http://www.intel.com/support/graphics/detect.htm

He just got back from a two month vacation, and isn't sure if anyone in his family played around with his computer. When I turn on the machine...

I have the same issues with X8 an Windows 7. The exact same thing with the back button no longer working at all, and not being able to focus on a window until CTRL+ALT+DEL-ing. This is definitely a hardware RELATED issue, because it happened in the installation environment as well. I think maybe it's a receiver issue, but not sure how to test such a thing.

Try the following: Check the BIOS HDD boot order. Disable old, non new windows HDD in BIOS. See if it works. If not repair Boot with W7 cd then reinstall other HDDs. The cables swap did nothing for me. My issue was too much overclock on my CPU. Odd because in Vista an over-overclock just caused a Blue Scrren of Death. In W7 I lost my BCD integrity. Cheers
