USB speeds were most likely the culprit, IMO. However, for a server, grab a cheap processor (Intel/AMD, doesn't matter) and motherborad with as many SATA ports as possible and set up a ZFS RAID via OpenSolaris. Remember, Gigabite ethernet and port teaming are you friends.

Electro-migration Read up please. Since you are not physically inside this processor, you can not and will not know if something is damaging the processor. Electro-migration happens even at stock speeds and volts. Amd and intel give a recommended highest temperature and voltage in order to obtain the best life out of their chips.
