So I have a PC with an AM2 board... Not an AM2+ board, but an AM2 board. I have 8gb of PC 6400 DDR2 RAM with Vista 64bit, and a 1TB hard drive. The processor I have with it is an Athlon x2 5000 stock at 2.6ghz. I plan on getting a new video card to keep up with gaming, but my question is about processors. I have read that AM3 processors are compatible with AM2 boards. I wanted to get ...

Checking bios updates for AM2+/AM3 Gigabyte boards shows they have incorporated a "CPU Core Control option" function like many of the ASUS boards already have. This seems to be a beta version. Thought that if you are interested in unlocking or even locking some cores it may come in handy!

I have seen a couple of these boards clock at HT 300+ in the past couple of days but I still have no luck. I have halved everything (multipliers) and still cant get out of the 260's. Is this a defect, or is it like everything else "it only has to run in spec" and if that is the case why bother having the option in BIOS? I know this is a user forum but any help would be appreciated.

"Sorry to sound n00bish... It says it is compatible with AM2+ boards and AM3 boards... This must mean that is has a DDR2 & DDR3 memory controllers yes?... Because the engadget article says "It'll be based on 45nm process technology and will boast an integrated DDR3 controller" Mentioning nothing on DDR2 " Yes, the only difference between AM2+ and AM3 is DDR2 vs DDR3 support, so if it it ...

Building & Upgrading

AMD and board partners made a lot of noise about AM3 chips being a drop-in replacement for current-gen AM2 boards (7** chipsets). They may need a BIOS update for full functionality but such updates exist for almost all RS7** mobos. Its when you talk about older boards and nVidia chipsets that things start getting dicey. That said the cheapest AM3 board out there is an ancient nForce4 (yes, really...

I have done some more searching and it seems that there are no AM2 boards with more than 6 SATA ports, so i have decided to bite the bullet and get a socket 775 board and a cheap CPU like the 5200 because i have found the Abit AB9 PRO has 9 (yes nine!) SATA ports. Unfortunatly it seems to be out of stock with no ETA on the overclockers site as i think its a bit old now but it serves my ...
