I swear, no matter what I am doing, I just always am thinking about my garden and I wonder if I'm just going off the deep end, it is a constant in my mind. I am so excited, I went to visit a nursery yesterday and got two free plants:one silver buttonwood and one yellow elder(needs alot of tlc, roots are a mess, out of pot and in the ground really deep!) Is this normal newbie gardener behavior?...

Around here the worst part of fall is our desperate attempt to save fav flowers and plants by moving them inside for the winter. This leads to window ledges full of coleus and impatiens and other inappropriate plants that slowly fade away and drop leaves all over the place. Some day we'll learn to just let them go to their natural rest instead of trying to bring summer indoors.

Hi! I am a college student @ BYU and I love fresh produce. But alas, I don't have a lot of money to spend. So if you have too much produce in your garden or on your trees, let me know and I will come and pick it. If you have fruit I could make you various jams/preserves or butters in return. Thanks!! I have been using the black shredded bark mulch in my perennial garden and around my landscape shrubs for years...but now I'm wondering if maybe it isn't the healthiest thing for my plants. I've read that the black dye isn't good for the soil. In general, the perennials perform well, but could be better. I also seem to get alot of earwigs. I don't compost and I know this is probably the single ...

yes, it's that time of year. My tomatoes didn't do as well as they usually do, it was too hot, too dry, we had a late frost that killed my plants and I had to replant, then floods, then two months with no rain, and then torrential rain. Anything that didn't split got blossom end rot. Sigh. I did get this many: I only canned 14 pints of salsa, 8 quarts of stewed tomatoes and 10 quarts ...

Years ago before everyone made daily trips into the grocery store people used their gardens to produce enough. this would last them through to the next planting season. Having enough canned and in the freezer will reduce the amount you are spending on food. Last year i began trying to increase the yield in my garden with natural ways and no fertilizers. After reading the news stories about the ...

I need to add an addendum to my statement above, I don't think about the garden all day, I wake up at 3:00 A.M. thinking about the garden and then can't get back to sleep :-( :-)
