Another version of this product is already installed. Installation of this version cannot continue. To configure or remove the existing version of this product, use Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel. Happens with anything I try to download or install from a disk/website... Microsoft website has been very un helpful and everyone wants 100-200$ for 10 minutes of there time. Please help

I have XP on my netbook, and am trying to load Acrobat Reader. After about 30 seconds I get the "Windows Installer service could not be accessed" message. When I try to start Installer in 'Services' it starts, but then after just a few seconds, stops, with the 'nothing to do' window. How can I resolve this problem? I have Windows Vista Home Premium Service Pack 2 Edition installed on my laptop. I want to install SQL Server 2008 and my processor, RAM & hard drive space etc exceed the minimum requirements. This problem started simply with My Office apps and WL apps having generic program icons rather than specific. Investigation led to the fact that the icon file was "not found".
