I just bought a '79 Alajuela 33 with a leaky stainless fresh water tank. I've read (D. Casey, N. Calder) that linear poly has many advantages over stainless. I've pulled the old approx. 70-gal. tank, planning to replace it with a couple of molded poly tanks. I still miight. But now I'm wondering if it's feasable to get the welded seams ground out and re-welded with the correct wire or rod and...

Thanks to advise I got from members on this site, I have finally decided to go ahead with my salt water tank project. I bought a 125 ga (1/2 inch thick glass with custom stand. It was a bit expensive for a used tank but the tank looks amazing with the custom stand. It included the tank and stand 100lbs of crushed rock, 3 containers of salt, testing materials and chemicals, a used Eheim 2217 and ...

How do you calculate the thickness or guage of a given metal (304 Stainless Steel for example) for a 36" dia. round, vertical cylinder water holding tank? If filled say the tank would be 25-30 feet tall. No physical pressure (pumps or vacuum) on this vessel (vented to atmosphere). Flat bottom, not a bulkhead style base. Not sure if water temp matters but for...

My tank takes 3/4" BSPM fittings, but they keep leaking (testing with air). The trouble is, the fittings don't screw all the way in, so I basically have to pack them out with loads of PTFE tape to get a seal, which I'm not happy about. Perhaps that's the way the pros bodge it? I'd prefer fittings that screw all the way in, but a suitable washer would work too I suppose. I'm not convinced ...

I have never done this type of part replacement and wonder what level of expertise is needed. I am handy with tools and have installed the waterline to this fridge from across the room. I recently noticed that there is water coming out of the overflow on the side of my house. After a bit of inspection, I see that the hot water storage tank is overflowing into the hot water header tank (which now contains extremely hot water). I also see the the ball valve in the header tank is leaking, adding additional cold water to the header tank. If i fix the ball valve, does that ...

Reweld the tank. Stainless is an excellent material for water (and fuel ) tanks. The water picks up no taste as plastic and fibreglass can, you won't get Alzheimers as with aluminum , and it's very long lasting as jrd and others have said. Every food processing plant, brewery, soft drink plant or dairy is stainless from one end to the other. After all, the tank did last 30 years! Any welder ...
