I realize most of you are probably short term traders, but I you probably still have an opinion on this - Do you think that the market is less efficient when it comes to long term value picks? So example, a company may be undervalued and rise like, 100% in 5 years. But because of the 5 year time frame, nobody wants to touch it right now. Is that logical? Also, I think this topic ...

Good talk, total head fake presentation he goes through his formula, spends the first 20 minutes saying how horrible all the companies are and then at the end basically says if you had invested in all these horribly ugly companies you'd have been up 288% over ten years http://www.valueinvestingcongress.com/downloads/p1 0/greenbla... -gunnar

Q&A with Bruce Greenwald - Professor of finance at Columbia University and Director of Research at First Eagle Funds. Link Has the way you practice value investing changed as a result of the financial crisis? We changed our focus on risk management. Many other value managers did as well, because they were blindsided. There are three principles that I believe good risk ...

Quote from Ghost of Cutten: P/Es can be almost worthless because they are historical. It is future earnings that matter, not past earnings. Ditto for PEG and, to a lesser extent, dividends. Relying on things like P/E or dividend yields is how a lot of non-value investors lose fortunes getting suckered into value traps, like Bill Miller with Fannie Mae (meanwhile I was shorting ...

I guess one question would be whether First Eagle ever followed a Warren Buffet approach to begin with, or whether they took a different view on value investing? If not, then not being on the same page as him might be OK. If so, then it does bring into question Greenwald's suitability as manager of the funds. That said, even if Warren Buffet did something stupid (which he clearly doesn't ...

I read the book when it came out. Most of the message board activity since then has been about how to further refine the stock picks. There are websites that want to charge you to do this. Joel says that he and his team of 13 researchers have not been able to reliably increase returns by adding further screens. There is a recent post here that says the posters have had mixed results. Looking...
Too be honest, I have yet to find one. Valueforum is supposed to be shizzit and I am giving it a whirl but their user interface sucks. Some valuable posts, but a lot of fluff too. I actually find more useful information lately, reading user comments on blog posts, like seeking alpha, salmon, dealbreaker. Here are some other forums http://www.gurufocus.com/forum/list.php?...

The $175 Billion number is most probably based on acquisition cost. There is too much for them to keep updating value. Much of the land was acquired so long ago that acreage that now sells for $50,000 an acre was bought for $90 an acre.

Raskolnikov, If you are going to reply, then it will help others if you at least try and add some value with your comment. Fundamental ETFs are value oriented exchange traded funds with low annual management costs and no upfront fes etc. They obviously are not as focused as any of the infamous Ben Graham direct stock picking approaches but then 'blass' above is clearly not an experienced ...
