I have been working on my 1974 124 Spider 1800 and couldn't see where to align the crank. Today I looked at the cover and saw the three marks on that; short, medium and long raised marks in the cast aluminum. Does that mean you have to put the cover on and set the crank, then take the cover off and thread the belt? Doesn't seem right. Is there another way to align the crank with the cover off? ...

I'm installing new TB and WP and the notches are off on the crank pulley but dead on on the cam pulley. I put the bottom cover with timing mark and replaced serpentine pulley with timing mark. Should these two marks line up? Looks like I'm off 9 teeth. I never did see anything move when I removed the old tensioner, but that's all I can think of. Actually it took a breaker bar to move it before...

Hi everyone, Trying to read the timing on my engine to work on more than just base timing. This requires seeing timing as high as 30, 40, or 50 degrees advance, such as when the engine is at higher RPMs, or under load (simulated by putting a vacuum source on the vacuum advance). My problem is the stock timing marks only go up to 14 and there isn't even any room to "draw" in the rest. What ...

I think this is the right pulley for this engine: T engine, carbs, 1972, SVDA. The pulley has these marks: I...I...I.I which should give +5,0,-5,-7,5 degrees. And i have to time it to -7,5 (the last sign to the right) with or without hose, because you shouldn't have vacuum signal at 900 rpm. Is all this correct? Thanks.

how do u set the timing marks on a chryler sebring 2005 2.4 liters 4 cylinder Answer Hi Lyle, This is a fairly complex explanation because of the tension adjustment which I can't do justice to because it covers about 8 steps and 3 figures. Roland PS:Here are the steps. Because of interference concerns, you should have aligned the timing marks before you removed the belt. If you have to...

I've had (more than) a few motors come through with the lipped lower idler. They most definately had them at some point. It makes sense to eliminate the lip to cut down on different parts needed. Jay

My engine was seized and I have it free now. I had to cut the timing belt off without first lining up all the marks. I assumed the marks for the crank would be there somewhere and when I couldn't find them, I looked at the cover. So that leads to my question above. I did the timing belt on this car about 22 years ago but don't remember anything about it..... C.

On the Mk1, the steel backing plate of the cambelt cover has an arrow shape at just forward of top-centre. This lines up with a notch in the back of the cam pulley and you don't need to remove the plastic cover to see it. I think the Mk2 has a slide-out pointer in the plastic cover, which when slid-out, aligns with the same notch on the back of the cam pulley. Therefore I think you do ...

A timing mark is an indicator used for setting the timing of the ignition system of an engine, typically found on the crankshaft pulley or the flywheel, being the largest radius rotating at crankshaft speed and therefore the place where marks at one degree intervals will be furthest apart. ...

^ Those idler pulleys.. well, you have two of the same and I'm not sure if it makes a difference or not. You're supposed to have one red and one black, each going to the left of the crank pulley. The one with teeth goes on the water pump, below the crank pulley, slightly to the right. I wouldn't hesitate to put the plastic cover on, it shouldn't get ripped up or anything. Each idler pulley ...
