I bought the car from a family member in 06 and the car had just had the timing chain, tensioners and guides changed (at least that is what was paid for and on the bill). The car can't have 15000 miles on it since then and I have been hearing the dreaded timing chain noise on start up and it has been getting worse. I have not driven it the last 3 months because I dont want it to turn into a major...

So, my crank mark is aligned to the TDC, and I'm getting tired of taking it all appart to re-adjust only for it to look more off then this, but the marks still don't fully align, they seam half a mark off. any sugguestions on timing belt installation here? Thanks!

Trying to understand the Bentley manual their pic shows two marks on either side of the case seam, but my pulley has only one mark ....... Also my motor seems to run good but rich in fuel and the one mark under the timing light is not even close to the case seam, its at the 10:30 position and if I bring it over to the case seam it stalls out.. any ideas ?

1997 s90 with DOHC.. nonturbo I am doing valve repairs after a broke timing belt. while I have the head off I can see that the timing mark on the crank dose not have the number one piston at TDC. it's really about half way down in the cylinder. is this the way it sould be for cam timing? any help would be great. Thanks James

Dear All Is there anyone who can help me, i have recently purchased a 1981 1500cc X1/9. I got the car only last weekend but unfortunatly driving the car home it never quite made the 50 mile trip. When i picked the car up it started ok perhaps a little rough to start as wouldnÂ’t happily tick over but then once warm ran very nicely. (I am advised t he car had been ...

I have a 76 Bug w/F.I. and stock pulley. There are no factory timing marks at all on the pulley! No dimples and no notches anywhere. There is a VW stamp about where TDC seems to be and a few scratches where the PO marked TDC and 5° ATDC supposedly. Question: is the VW stamp TDC or is it 5° ATDC?

bought a 28oz balancer. realized (after the fact) there are no timing marks. bougth some timing tape, just wondering if the balancer has a 0 mark to it at all? there is a notch in it, but that is all and it is nowhere near TDC. i have found TDC and i can set the tape to that, but it just seems weird that their are not marks on this part. thoughts?

The marks will still line up even if the tension is off on the belt. Basically, the tensioner should NOT move any noticeable amount to keep the tension on the belt after rotating the motor over several times OR more. For the old hydraulic tensioner , that means you can put the pin back in the tensioner, it may take more pressure to do it, but it should be close enough you can get it back in. ...

In addition to the pulley marks issue, in my (very limited) experience, you have to re-adjust the carburetor as you alter the timing. If you just move the timing a bunch, you'll either speed the engine way up or kill it (as you discovered). The way I did it when I had to correct my timing was move the timing a little, re-adjust carb, move the timing more, readjust carb, etc. Then, of course,...

I appreciate the reponse. If the other parts were replaced less than 10000 miles ago are you suggesting that it might be just a bad tensioner? Is the Iwis chain oem or aftermarket? What would you suggest? I dont mind doing the chain, guides and tensioner over again if I need to.

Richard, good luck with your quest, just a few things to add: not sure what Haynes revision of manual you have, but only the later ones had a 1500 supplement and the main section is still 1300 (which uses different timing marks) - there's also a mistake in the earlier 1500 revision for timing marks i believe, so this could be adding to your confusion It's always worth replacing the cam ...
The timing marks are on the timing cover....to be used with the mark (line) on the harmonic balancer. Look on the passengerside of the timing cover down low and you will see it.
