So I finally bought a new CPU fan (and heatsink) to replace my old failing fan. In a thread I started about thermal paste, someone said a new fan won't need thermal paste if it happens to have a thermal pad. Unless that's wrong, what does a thermal pad look like? I don't think this new fan (Thermaltake model TR2-R1) has one, because the box doesn't mention one (and maybe because it wasn't ...

I'm just curious, what everyone here uses for thermal paste? I'm bored at the moment, can't sleep, meds keeping me awake as usual I'm not really looking to find out what I should get or anything, I just picked up a big tube of OCZ freeze yesterday, it was all they had when I went to the store nearby, 9$ is more than I wanted to spend, but its a big tube, and considering i saw some generic ...

Ive ordered a Pentium 3 550mhz (SL3F7), minus heatsink. I already have a 600mhz (SL3JM) version siting around, that never worked properly, that has attached a large passive heatsink. I had to modify this h/s, cutting off the ends, so that CPU could be seated in the slot (it still only mounted adequately, not 100% securely). Anyway, question is: if I swap that h/s onto the 550, do I need ...

Sorry for the cross post but I'm not sure whether I have a cpu or graphics card problem. Ok So I built this computer nearly 2 years ago and it's generally been very good. Yesterday when i was putting the system under a lot of stress it decided to turn off and when turned back on it said that the cpu had overheated. So I thought I'd tread carefully and only use it for a little while and ...

Well I was about to order some of that Zalman paste in the bottle with the brush and guess what, yes that's right Scan don't sell it any more The sole reason I got that last time was because of the easy application , well actually it was rated quite good as well So I need a replacement paste and not sure which to go for one as the order of importance for me is 1. application - ...

So after I got my system running and running hwmonitor, it seems if my amd 955 is running a little too hot idle. I believe it's because when I was mounting the heatsink, I had to adjust it a couple times while it was touching the cpu, so the thermal paste may have shifted and spread around too much. I'm deciding to take it off and remount the heatsink, but from what I read on some forums.......

I have some AS5 and MX3 here, the AS5 is easier to apply. The MX3 tends to stick to everything but the cpu. It doesn't really matter anyway, my CPU is 30C away from max temps under 100% load, and I don't care to overclock it further as it's plenty fast for me.

This has got slightly off-topic, maybe I should start another thread, but re potential RAM probs: Not had a chance to use Memtest yet, but I did try each of the 3 RAM sticks individually and they all got Doc Watson coming up, on those web pages. 2 x Kingston 128mb and 1 x Crucial 64mb. My test makes it far less likely memory probs are the cause of Doc Watson, right? Unless all 3 sticks are ...

Well, I just finished installing the new fan and reconnecting everything. I seem to have made it through the procedure without destroying the computer (or initiating the end of the universe). The thermal paste would seem to be working, because the CPU temperature is fluctuating between 25 and 27 C.

zipzoomflyhigh wrote : Thats not true. What moron told you that? You can use any thermal paste you want. Besides OEM cpu's don't come with a fan and they dont come with thermal paste either, so you would have to apply thermal paste. Wrong again. http://www.xtremetek.com/info/index.php?id=14
Re: Is aftermarket thermal paste really necessary?? Would not say 'damaged'. It is non-functional. The part came like that from the foundry. It can happen, is normal. __________________ MSI P45 Platinum|E7400@4.0Ghz@1.432V|Hyper212|TWIN2X4096-8 500C5(5-5-5-15)@2.1V HD4890[Xfire...

I also think it is too much (but diffucult to see it with the eye) You could also make two smaller spots(half rice corn ^^) with a 0.5 cm gap in between them to let them spread better. Have a look at this Youtube video about spreading:http: //www.youtube.com/watch?v=EyXLu1Ms-q4&feature=fvw

The reason we use thermal compound is because two metallic surfaces are never perfectly smooth: there are always microscopic pits and bumps in the surface. So, when you push the CPU and the Heatsink together, there would be small microscopic air voids in between the two surfaces, and air is pretty poor at transferring heat. That's why we use thermal compound: it fills those microscopic air voids....
