When trying to reduce the operating temperature of your computer system, thermal grease plays as important part as that of the cooling fan and heatsink. You will be able to run your CPU a few degrees cooler if you choose the right thermal grease to work with your setup. bayreviews.com

Is it worth the effort to remove factory heatsinks & apply new thermal grease? I was contemplating whether or not take apart a GTX 275 & remove a NB heatsink to apply some aftermarket thermal grease. Will it make a noticable difference?

Im building my own computer now and a noticed that my motherboard instructions mention thermal grease, however my cpu instructions do not. when i was taking the heatsink off, i noticed that the heatsink already has what appears to be a type of thermal paste. do i need thermal grease anyway?

So my PS3 ylod on me and I decided fixing it myself. The first time I did it I used some cheap thermal grease and a week later I got it again, then I opened it up again, bought a better thermal grease, Artic Silver-5, but I don't hear the fan I feel air coming out but no fan noise and when you put it vertically the top is hot. So could it be that I put too much thermal grease or something else ...

nope, either use the preapplied tp or clean the tp off the heatsink and put a pea sized amt on the cpu and let the heatsink spread it out unless its hdt, then look it up

Silicone Grease is the traditional cheap and lower performance compound. Generally it's accepted that a silver based compound or similar has better thermal properties and thus better performance. I don't know by how much as it seems that no-one compares to it. Funny thing is I bought some the other day to compare to the high end silver stuff and will be testing it this week.
