I haven't been so far north in 20 years and am really looking forward to having a great time with my kids. We expect to do the usual site seeing ...

Bummer about the "no dirt" caveat. A trip to the Indig art site at Split Rock near Laura is easy from Cairns and would have given you a good feel for the Cape - there are a couple of easy dirt sections though and if you don't tell, I won't ;-)... Cooktown is now doable without leaving the asphalt (Cairns > Mareeba > Lakeland > Cooktown), and I'd definitely recommend you do it this trip ...

This morning I was checking the MPLS Trib for weather info, and saw the story about this new cougar. It seems to be heading your way at 5-7 miles/day, so keep your eyes peeled. I do remember that we discussed your old cougar siting earlier.
