I have a question in regards to the use tax advantaged space for saving: Why wouldn't priority be given to investments that should perform the strongest? In other words, for a longer time frame why wouldn't the priority be to put stocks in tax advantaged space over bonds. Assuming stock gains are 7% annually and bonds 4% annually, after 40 years you would pay a greater overall amount of taxes...

Whatever money people don't have to spend, they save. Seriously? For most people (maybe not the frequent posters on this forum!), savings takes discipline; spending comes easy. Most people don't decide, "I'll spend $x and save whatever is left over. Instead, they pretty much spend what they have available. The question to ask oneself in my scenario is whether spending more now will ...

I've recently been spending some time considering the approach advocated in the Placing Cash Needs in a Tax-Advantaged Account wiki and have concluded that it is the right approach for me. My question is whether this is not the right time of year to implement the strategy? I want to be cognizant of not buying a year-end dividend on the ETFs that I would be moving from my tax ...

RedTail, Have you considered I-bonds for your emergency fund? They are paying 3.36% now and you can postpone the taxes for up to 30 years and avoid state taxes altogether. I am a 20 yr old looking for advice. I currently work four 10-12 hr days for an employer and run a small business on the side as well ($8,000 - $12,000 net/yr). I have no need for my extra income right now and am looking for ways to shelter as much as possible. I have my Roth maxed out and was wondering about a SEP or similar. I'm also wondering, can I do a ...

Please forgive my ignorance - but I really am trying to learn this investing stuff. Before coming here I was trying to maintain the same asset allocation in taxable and tax advantaged accounts. 60% stock and 40% percent bonds in both tax advantaged and taxable accounts. Now I hear max out bonds in tax advantaged, and maintain AA with regards to total money in taxable and tax advantaged. In ...
