In December I always go to HRBlock and estimate what my tax refund will be. They have a free calculator and it's always within a $200-$200 of what we get back. My wife was in US for 3 months during the tax year 2009. But I stayed back in India. My wife had specified her Status as Single because i did not stay with her during her 3 month stay. Kindly confirm if this right or we need to change the status to Married and Filling jointly.

If, like me, you get an e-mail about a tax refund, and haven't been in contact with HMRC about one, don't open it. I got one this morning and Firefox and AVG determined that the attachments had unknown viruses attached.

Hi Welfarite, you state that an newly unemployed person might be entitled to a tax refund. On the form it states to wait a minimum of 4 weeks before you apply for this and that it is in relation to tax deducted from your pay since the 1st of January. If I wait 4 weeks it will be in the new tax year 2010, will they still take into consideration a tax refund for 2009? Thanks

Thank you for the reminder! I paid off my car in February and don't have my title yet! And trips ARE an issue. I moved 1,200 miles from my entire family, but even once a year visiting is a huge chunk of money.

thanks for the reply - it actually turned up this morning! it took about 5 weeks in all - as usual places are quick to take your money but not so quick to pay it back! the reason i done special delivery (i usually just get proof of posting) is it was the week that the postal strike was on for a couple of days and the post was a bit dodgy with stuff going missing and taking longer than usual ...

( In the paycheck preview window change the deduction for your insurance item to a positive in the amount that you need to refund. This will give the employee the money back and correct the taxable income. You will get a warning about it being a positive number and you can just say okay or yes, whichever option it give you.
