yep. it was the engagement arm on the starter. replaced the whole unit kinda goofy process because basically your just reaching behind your intake manny blind the whole time, but it wasn't too tricky and everything worked out. it was not a loose flywheel or bad teeth on the flywheel, just the starter. just wanted to post that in case any one searches for it.

Cleaning out the garage -- I'm a midyear guy and not real familiar with this series. I had a '74 for a brief period back in ancient times, so I think these parts are from that era. PM or email if interested, please. Starter motor ass'y, complete: Delco Remy 1108430 dated 3M13 (73, Dec, 13th) so I assume it's correct for most of '74 model year....

My starter has started to give me problems, some days it won't start, does'nt even turn over and starter does'nt engage, this has begun to get anoyingly more frequant, so last night at work I decided to take the starter off and have a look at it, (what a mamoth job!) I could'nt get the starter out without taking all of the exaust manifold and down pipe off, so i just cleaned the spigot shaft and...

Starters on landys are notorious for sticking. There's a gear inside commonly referred to by mechanics as a 'dog gear.' Occasionally a little tap with a lump hammer can rectify this sticking so that the starter engages on ignition. I had mine recon'ed for 40 quid - looks like your bench work has saved you that cabbage which you can now spend on another problem!

Re: Starter motor, I think... If you did break your nose (quite likely) you should really have put a cold cloth on it and nipped to casualty to get it set straight. I broke mine once (diving in the 'pool) and next day it was well swollen. Popped to casualty. "I dink I'b brokeb by dose" prod, prod, prod, tweak "yes, that's broken...
