We're a bunch of friends ( 5 adults + 3 children) spending a week in Sicily from December 26 to Jan 2 and would really appreciate some advice from Vagabonda and other Sicily experts. December is probably not the best time to visit Sicily, but then we only have that one week because of our work schedules, and we've always wanted to go to Sicily, so December it is....

Myself (36) and girlfriend (33) away on business for a week in July 2010. planning on going somewhere to chillax for a week to ten days thereafter. She wants Dubrovnik, I wanted Ibiza (avoiding San Anto etc.) and both of us wouldn't mind sicily. We just want to relax, sun ourselves, swim and dine out of fabulous seafood. We don't really plan on travelling around too much while there. Of the ...

I am planning a firts trip to Sicily in 2010. What would be the best time to go (March, April, May, September, October, or November)? What low cost airlines are available from Amsterdam or Rome to Palermo or Catania? I presume the best way to go from site to site would be using a car. Can anyone recommend a car rental agency? Thank you. Pete Minneapolis

Ok, we are heading to my Fiances family's homeland and the Irish kid (me) has to plan it **although we are stopping in Dublin on the way back :) Anyways, after doing some research, we want to make sure we get to a few places in Sicily but are just not sure how to schedule things and where to spend most of our time. We will be going in Mid June (13th-21st...

I'm finding it difficult to nail down when, specifically, the tuna hunt--The Mattanza--actually occurs off the island of Favignana. I know it is some time between late February and May. I read Theresa Maggio's wonderful book (Mattanza) and will be in Palermo for the month of April. Does anyone have a line on specific dates? Thanks.

Hello everyone, I have been pouring over the forums and trying to digest Vagabonda’s information and advice but would like to ask for some more personal advice regarding our itinerary if possible. We are a group of 4 flying in and out of Catania. We plan to hire a car and hope to visit Syracuse and Ortygie, then across to Agrigento and the valley of Temples, and ...

My Wife and I are flying into Catania Mid May 2010 for a two week holiday. My thoughts are to spend one week based in Taormina and the other week in Syracuse. We would like to use public transport to travel around to see the sights in North east and South East Sicily only. Is a 50/50 split on cities a good idea ? We are quite happy to sit on buses/trains for...

I've posted on passenger car ferries from Mainland Italy to Sicily, Spain, Malta and Tunisia, but I've saved "the best for last": ferries from Mainland Italy to Sardinia. A couple of introductory observations: 1. There are five "ports of call" on Sardinia which have passenger car ferry service: Porto Torres (useful for Sassari and Alghero), Golfo Aranci, Olbia (these two useful for the Costa ...

Hi, I am travelling to Sicily in New year time and just realize that Malta is a short ferry trip from OSuth Sicily. I wonder if it is worth while to pay a visit for 2-3days just to Valletta? I have info on the ferry already, my concerns is on the (1) places to visit and the more importantly, (2) reasonable price (say below 50 euro) accommodation for 1 person around 30/31 Dec - 2 Jan. My ...

Three of us are scheduled to fly from Sicily to Rome on a discount airline early on July 11 to catch AC 891 (2 paid, 1 award) which was to leave at 12:30pm. Now it shows leaving at 10:30 am. It may be impossible to make that flight. I have not received ...

We will be in Venice over Christmas and will end up in Sicily in the New Year. In between we will be going to Rome and Naples with a day in Pompeii. The question is whether to stop in Florence before going to Rome or skip it. If we go to Florence we will only end up with one full and 2 part days there and I have been told it is not that great for young children .. our son is 4. Thoughts,...
