Found this on the net and thought a few here may find it of interest. A short documentary on how shellac records were made in the 1940s era: http://www.archive.org/details/CommandP1942 pretty cool stuff (no OH&S back then!!!) .

I am getting ready to start finishing a nightstand I made out of cherry for my wife. I intended on using BLO, followed by garnet shellac, and then follow it up with some armor seal. Unfortunately, I ordered the shellac from Woodcraft, and after waiting a month for them to ship it, they told me that they would not be shipping it because they lost their supplier. Can anyone point me to an ...

I love the look of amber shellac over pine. I have been using Zinsser Amber shellac everywhere in my house. Even the fir floor. So know I am on to the kitchen cabinets and I know shellac is a poor choice, but I was not able to get the same grain popping look with any other product to match. So I called Zinsser directly and wanted there take on what can go over their waxy shellac to protect it. ...

I read the online instructions for Crystalac and prior posts here, but am wanting to confirm that you can use Crystalac over Shellac. I was thinking of putting a Crystallac finish over the top of the Shellac for a more durable finish. Does it have any problem bonding? Should I "scuff" the shellac (w/ 320) before Crystalac application?

Anyone have experience using Zinsser B-I-N Shellac Based Primer? I'm researching the best way to paint my kitchen cabinets white. The cabinets have real wood faces and doors that are stained fairly dark w/ a gloss on them. The cabinet boxes themselves are particle board w/ a veneer. BIN comes up over and over and over in ...

Does shellac come in different finishes i.e. gloss, semi gloss, satin? Bougjht some at local home depot and they only had 2 cans of shelve, clear/amber, so I couldn't tell. Part 2. How cold can mt shop be and still spray finishes. The cans don't say and right now in Texas my shop gets to 50 degrees (F) which is fine to work in but I don't want to spray a bunch of things and have it go ...

I am going to be painting some laminate kitchen cabinets. They are in a home that I own that I will be renting out. My plan is to clean the cabinets, probably lightly sand the surface, then prime with Zinsser B-I-N shellac-based primer. After that, paint with either latex-based or oil-based paint. The Zinsser B-I-N shellac-based primer says to not clean the cabinets with TSP. ...

This was a Christmas gift to my sister. The clock dial and mechanicals are from Woodcraft and its based upon their Hancock wall clock design, with a few changes. I love how the grain really pops with the BLO and Shellac finish. Overall, everyone liked the clock and I'm very happy with how it turned out. Should have made two of them so that I could have kept one for my mantle!

Here's a wall mirror I made for a house warming gift. Plans out of Woodsmith #57. Cherry frame with BLO and Shellac finish. This is the 5th one I've made over the years. Doesn't take much time or materials to make. I used Dominoes instead of half-laps for the joinery.

Does anybody know how to antique a URB? I was looking into a very dark brown, black cherry look...oiled..and french polished. Is it okay to stain the wood with typical wood working gel stains or do I usedtraditional techniques with pigments in the shellac/den-alchohol and linseed oils? I think on plywood back and sides the gel stain(oil based) is fine but the solid wood spruce top I am reluctant...

John, I think if you sealed the recess with some shellac or even lacquer first, it might stop the color from migrating into the wood. Some of the best stuff I have found for coloring epoxy is oil based artist paints. It mixes well and make vivid colors. Using a powderd media for the color works very well, like some of the pigments for powder coating. You can get little containers of yellow,white,...
