I am sure most here are familiar with the concept of shear flow as it related to horizontal shear stresses in beams. When designing a I-Shaped plate girder, most references, if not all, will design the weld between the flange and web using the shear formula VQ/I to determine the force on the welds. My question is, isn't there bending stress on the weld as well in the form of MC/I? If one had ...

In my mind, the bending can be introduced by several different devices, all will result in linear strain and stress in the systems. One is the simplest - hold the beam ends by two fingers and apply bending force, now the top most fiber would be in axial compression, and the lower extreme fiber would be in axial tension. If we can control the forces precisely, through inear elastic behavior, ...

I am doing design of a composite girder which is formed of a steel "U" trough with concrete slab at top. Because of torsional and distortional warping stresses, do I have to design shear studs for these load effects? If so and warping stress being, say A (N/mm2) at the junction between the web and concrete slab, is the additional longitudinal shear flow equal to A x steel web thickness? For ...

And now a feasible manner to get the interface requirements with some accuracy. 1st you plan where your studs to make the thing composite are to be. According to the nodes yo then get, I would decompose my concrete beam in a matrix of rectangular plates of concrete, to the nodes of which I would tie with rigid links to corresponded symmetricalle placed at position steel plates, and then joined ...

Dear all, I was trying to calculate the shear stress due to fluid flow inbetween two parallel plates from the velocity profile taken from the middle of the flow channel (along vertical axis 'y') using comsol. The solution i got is two times the analytical solution i have calculated. The analytical equation i have used here is Tou=viscosity*(Umax/h) ...
