Dear Arshad Khan, I hope that you are fine and doing keep. I want to ask about calculating weight of beams and shear walls in psf... I knw how to do that for column. what i do is i divide total column weight by tributary area of the column. how to calculate the same for shear walls and beams. Thanks in advance Regards, Muhammad Umar Answer Hi Muhammad, I don't know why you wish to...

For designing slabs supported by columns and shear walls, how could you model the shear wall so a reaction for the area is given rather than for nodes?

i have to design a three story house on long island where the basic wind speed exceeds 110mph and therefore i cannot use prescreptive methods to design the vertical diaphragms. From the ground(1st floor) to the 2nd floor the exterior walls are reinforced CMU with 4"brick in front.  From the second floor to the attic (3rd) the exterior wall is 6" metal studs 12"oc and 15/32 exterior plywood.  ...

Ladies and gents: Attached to this post are two details of built up wood headers in a wood shear wall.  The structure is a four story wood structure, located in a high seismic zone. These details are for the headers located in the exterior walls where the shear is transferred around the openings.  We had to use this method because of low aspect ratios, there are numerous openings in the ...

When we design hold downs for wood shear walls, we use the load combination (0.6-0.14SDS)D+0.7pE (seismic) and 0.6D+W (wind) to calculate the uplift. In an other word, the formula we use are T=(Mot-(0.64-0.14SDS)Mr)/L (seismic) and T=(Mot-0.6Mr)/L. We got many projects approved using these equations. In other people's spreadsheets, we found that they use safty factors instead of those ASCE ...

Greetings I 'd like to ask a question regarding boundary zone in special concrete wall as per UBC 1997. 1) Is that correct that the vertical reinforcement layout in boundary zone be controlled by the requirement of confinement spacing? 2) Can we still include the rebar outside boundary zone to compute interaction diagram as usual done by may building analysis & design package? So is it ...

Hello:   Can anyone give advice on my problem below? Under lateral seismic, I am developing very large shears and moments in short beams (about 1 meter length) connecting shearwalls and the framing system.  My lateral force system is only shearwalls, so the framing system is designed for gravity loads. That is, the framing system has to be able to deform under the seismic load without ...

What equation is used for the buckling of a very thing shear wall/beam. In ACI they have the general buckling formula but that's considering a uniform stress over the whole section. In this case it should be a linear varying stress. I might use AISC's equation for the local buckling of a W shape flange bent about its weak axis. This is similiar to the stress distribution in a shear wall minus ...

Hello Please pardon my lack of knowledge. In RC structures we have two main systems to resist seismic loading, either: 1) moment resistance frame for both gravity loads and seismic/wind with special detailing requirements for the columns and beams or 2) frame (or flate plate ...) to take gravity loads and a shear wall system to take seismic load. My questions are: 1) I know for a flat ...

Other than compatibility as talked above, all I can see is vertical shear at the wall-slab interface (same as beam-column interface) caused by weight of the water and the slab. Again, pi has something to do with this.
