I have a few of these available for sale. Each is completely activate-able, and comes complete with battery and charger. Phones may have some cosmetic smudges, but function completely. Perfect for those emergency situations where you don't have cell phone access. The picture below is of a generic 9500, and not the actual phones (which look the same). These phones do *not* come with SIM...

Hello, We will paddle next summer in PWS west, maybe near Icy Bay. Is it worth taking our VHF (I think our european VHF is OK for US?) or is there so few boats that it would be better to rent a satellite phone? Marie

Load up on flare pistols and a cutlass too besides the satellite phone....and stop shaving for the passage. You'd be surprised how quickly potential 'pirates' lose interest when there's a shady looking individual on deck with a pistol and a cutlass tucked in their belt. Make sure you don't lob any flares at approaching fishing vessels looking to sell you fish, however.

If you only have one receiver, it does not have to be connected to the phone line or even to ethernet. Dish dropped the phone line requirement on the first dual tuner receiver last February. And as others have said, updates come in through the satellite, not phone or ethernet.

Updates, as in EPG & s/w, are downloaded from satellite. If you do not hook up your box to a phone line (or internet) you will be charged $5 (unless you only have 1 box, IIRC). This helps them ensure you are not account stacking (feeding 2 or more locations with just one account), and aids in that all important ordering of extra cost content.

I have been very happy with the Kenwood system. Others have commented on the Garmin Nav which works just like other Garmin units. I use the Bluetooth phone and mic a lot - work very well. Also love the satellite radio access (Sirius and/or XM) and 24 presets. I am clueless about install. Good luck!
