Can SATA II drives be used to replace a failed SATA drive, in the above desktop machine? The specs for the machine indicate SATA, but I am unsure of the new II's will work in the system. Thanks in advance.

Well IIRC Slackworth mentioned elsewhere that Crucial were buying into the SSD market with low prices - which they wouldn't sustain long term...so in that sense we were spoilt.

I'm truly sorry for not being able to understand what you're trying to say. In any case, think of SATA like internal USB, regardless of how you connect your drives to the port, they should appear when you view the drives through the BIOS or the OS.
