Few things, type the password instead of copy/pasting. Secondly linux passwords are case sensitive so don't type "a" if its "A". Also, this might sound silly but was the given username = "root" or another account with access to sudo?

For someone to delete your mySQL databases they would have needed either mySQL command access to a user with full grants or a shell user like root who can manually delete the files.
