I've recently moved to Richland, WA (Eastern Washington) and have a struggling Redbud tree in the back yard. We are zone 7 (although, probably closer to a high 6). My soil is like beach sand when I dig. I have plenty of water available, but this is a desert (hot summers, cold winters with minimal precip ~7 inches a year). At the recommendation of the local nursery, I added soil amendments to try ...

I have Chinese and Eastern Redbud tree seeds. What is the proper amount to put in for trades? I only have limited quantities, but want to be fair in my trades. Thanks! Jen

I planted a redbud tree about three years ago. The tree seemed to do ok for the first two summers but this summer I noticed that the leaves never got the size that they should be. The tree seemed to be struggling to survive. They also seemed kind of wilty, even after a rain or watering. I was afraid maybe it was planted too deep so I scraped off some of the soil. How can I tell if it is planted ...

I have a redbud in my backyard that was BEAUTIFUL in the spring. Once summer hit, the leaves started developing black spots that eventually take over the entire leaf. The leaves don't wilt or fall off; they just turn black and hang on. We just had a lot of rain recently and little leaves have begun to sprout all over the tree. Each of the new leaves are already showing the same problems. We've...

I need to move an Oklahoma Redbud that is about 5' tall. We have redone our front garden and it is now in the pathway. Do I need to wait until it goes dormant this Fall (loses its leaves)? Peggy

The bark of my ten year old redbud seems to be shedding right at the base of the tree. I don't like the idea of a tree losing its bark. Â Is this a common problem with redbuds? Â Is it something to worry about? Answer Paul: This may indicate possible insect or disease activity. Â You might consider scratching around in that area to check for any "sawdust" or wet areas where something may be "...

I have planted my seeds and they are starting to sprout. I am not quite sure what to do next. Â I have them in a cupcake tin with good starter soil. I need some step by step instructions as to what to do next and when is a good time to plant in ground. I live in Florida Thank you Answer Hi Pam, Thanx for your question. Â Keep your seedlings in a window that faces the East or the South so ...

This morning a rather large bird visited my redbud tree and then flew up to the top of the house. At first, it looked like a finch of some kind, but was larger than a titmouse and smaller than a cardinal. This is a poor picture, but maybe you can see enough detail to ID. I thought it might be a Red-breasted nuthatch. I appreciate any comments. Shelia Pittsboro, NC

Ken had the right advice for determining if a branch is dead. Scratch it. If you see green the branch is still alive, if you see brown or black then the branch is dead or diseased and needs to go. There is something inherently wrong with this tree's situation because it should have grown substantially more than it has since 2005. Redbuds grow very quickly when they're happy so this one is ...

Definitely not disagreeing with the Redbud's ornamental value for home landscapes. Disease and pest issues would still be a concern, but my main concern is the varability of reported fall color (by plant, not by year) and the long seedpods. I think it gets negative press because it is well documented: Borers attack the trunk of older and stressed trees. Scale insects can usually be ...

Front Yard - a Japanese maple although I'm not voting for Emperor One because it exceeds your size requirements. I would plant Fireglow instead. Side Yard - Either the Redbud or the Serviceberry Back Yard - Autumn Gold Ginkgo
