We are running SQL 2000 SP3 on Windows 2003 SP2. We have a third party application that uses a SQL database. The consultants for the 3rd party app are saying that we need to run "Grant view server state to Public" in the master database. I cannot find any info on what exactly is the data that will be made available by granting this. I am hesitant to grant permission to something I do not ...

Robin, I was mislead this time by the "grant view server state" which is not a valid command in SQL Server 2000. (Sadly, this is the second time today that I wrote a 2005 answer to a 2000 question.) To the extent that there is some viewable server state in SQL Server 2000 it is pretty open to anybody. For example: SQL 2000: sp_who available to public and will show all connections SQL 2005...
