So, I was just informed last week that AD will no longer be receiving speech therapy after this month since they said he is speaking at an "age-appropriate level" now. He does speak in 4-5 word sentences now and does have many words however his pronounciation/articulation is still off. It's almost like he's not using his tongue when he talks so it makes it hard to understand him. I, of ...

I saw a poster for the upcoming Disney film Beverly Hills Chihuahua as I was coming out of the most excellent Tropic Thunder the other day, and noted that on the poster (here on wikipedia) there's a pronounciation guide in case you've got no idea how "Chihuahua" is pronounced. I noticed the same thing for the poster for Ratatouille , but brushed it off as your average viewer ...

of the last name "Del Potro" Whenever I heard John McEnroe say it, he would pronounce it as "Del Po-cho", I was thinking he had a Portuguese name lol. But these commentators are say "Del Potro" and from what I've read online, that is how you say it. Apparently it means Colt in Spanish.

I have this continuing disagreement at work. We can't agree on this issue. That's why I turn myself to the collected wisdom of this board. I hold your opinion in the highest esteem, so I want you all to say I'm right It's this: router How on earth do you pronounce that?? (and does that vary per language?) ---- I say it with the ' ou ' sound similar to ' wh o ' or 'w ou ld' ...

Well, I'm 35 weeks pregnant now with #6, so I would really like to have a list of about 3 girls and boys names to take to the hospital with me. You all were so much when I've posted before!!! We never know "THE NAME" LOL until the baby is here. I guess the baby's birth makes us actually decide! So, I think I'm liking Neve these days. I realize Neve Campbell pronounces it with a short E ...

Does anyone happen to know how to pronounce the name "Lacika"? I've been searching on Google but haven't found anything yet. As far as I know there are no special characters in it. Thanks in advance.

I was listening to NPR on the ride to work this morning, and they were broadcasting BBC news. The story was about a member of a band who donated his kidney to another member. The announcer, who was British, pronounced the word " saxophonist" as "sax-AH-fuh-nist". Here in America, I've never heard it pronounced differently than "SAX-uh-phone-ist". Having never heard ...

gees you guys have some funny ways to say and spell things, like (say) Herbs, (the things you cook with), it is spelled with an H so it is Herbs, just like her, but with a B not "erbs", or carburator, it is spelled Carburettor and pronounced as such or Alumanum, it is spelled Aluminium, and pronounced as Alu-min-i-um, I know it is not a big deal, but if it is spelled as such, then it should be ...

Not to be trivial, but don't want to seem weird in a shop as well, how do you correctly pronounce the names, Arai, or Shoei? Arai, A-RYE? (Catcher in the Rye?) or A RAY? (like Day? Day time?) I am not good with Japanese, but it seems more like A RAY. Shoei, Sho-AY (Show, Ay, like in Day), or Shoo-Ay (Shoe, like shoes, ay like day?) /noob

Monika wrote: Italian: definite reading, definite spelling Not completely. Italian has 2 mid front vowels that are both spelled ; sometimes you can tell which vowel it is from the stress, sometimes you can't. Also, stress is usually on the second to last syllable, but sometimes it's on the second to last, and it doesn't seem to be predictable, and it's not indicated in the orthography.

It may've really been necessary with Ratatioulle. With the new movie it's more of a tag line. I've never heard anyone pronounce the breed "Chee-WOW-uh," it's usually more like "Chee-WAH-wah" or "Chi- WAW-uh."

You girls are awesome! :) You pretty much hit the nail on the head with some of my concerns about our names. I think I hesitate on Isaac because it has such a different feel than Drake and Blaise. Although, dh really likes Isaac, so we'll see where we get with that. Another boys name we've thought about is Zeke, but we have a nephew Zach and worried it might be too close. I think Britta ...

UPDATED Sat Aug 30 2008 14:27:52 There are exceptions, like "center" ("centre" is more etymologically faithful, because the word comes from Greek "centrum") I love nitpicking. I even get paid for it. So let me tell you (for free ) that "centrum" is Latin, not Greek. The original Greek word was "kentron", with a totally different meaning, btw. See how Romans already ...
