I am trying to do something that in theory should be extremely easy but doesn't seem to work for me. I want to take a port that has mirrored traffic (used for my web-filtering product) and eliminate all of the traffic from networks that are not filtered. I want to do this by using Citrix XenServer and the iptables built into the server and DROP the packets that do not match what I want to accept....

Hi there, I've been using wireshark, and when I put it in promiscuous mode, I still only see broadcast and traffic to my machine. On the FAQ page for wireshark they address this by saying that some cards/configurations do not support promiscuous mode. I am facing a strange problem, it is only by chance that I found the workaround mentioned in the title. I am running a "router on a stick" configuration.  I have a Cisco Catalyst 2950 Switch set up with port Fa 0/1 as a trunk to my pfSense box.  It carries 5 vlans to the box.  I am using 802.1Q, not ISL. My eth0 is in promiscuous mode by default and any settings from the guest's OS are ignored. If I understand it correctly, in some older versions of Xen this had to be done in order to make multicast work but it shouldn't be necessary any more. Would it please be possible to turn this off? (I don't know what version of Xen VPSLink is using.) It really clutters my NIDS reports and has some security...

On a span port you probably don't want to reject any traffic as you would be interfering with the traffic you're mirroring, ( the source may get confused if it sees an ACK from the original destination as well as an ICMP host-prohibited from your XenServer for packets it sends).
