I was in the process of performing a series of print screen and pastes. They were all pasting fine, until they started to appear as black images. Now when I perform a print screen, the clipboard displays a blacked-out image. What did I do?

Can I remove the UI controls for a screen print? I would love to make some of the views I see my desktop background... but don't really need those controls. Thanks!

Test that Print Screen is working first. Hit Print Scrn key or Alt+Print Scrn and then open up Paint/Edit/Paste . Does the print screen shot show up? Have you tried saving it attaching it? Have you tried after saving it, open the Save BMP and copying it and then pasting it into an Email?
