My 1999 CRV has never had a power steering fluid change. It now has 87,000 km. The manual warns not to use any fluid (including Automatic Transmission Fluid) other than Genuine Honda Power Steering Fluid, otherwise damage will occur. I have some leftover Valvoline Automatic Transmission Fluid II and some generic ATF too. I plan to use them, as PS fluid is usually ATF. I am not considering Honda's...

I went to the dealer today to buy power steering fluid and coolant for my 2008 G35 sedan. Surprisingly, the parts desk gave me Matic-D for the power steering fluid and claimed it would work. Was the dealer's parts desk wrong??

Bad to drive with no power steering fluid? Hey guys, I know this is a noob question, because the answer is probably "Yes, it will ruin the PS pump," but I have no choice as I have presentations the next couple of days and the parts to fix won't be here until Tuesday. The plastic nipple broke off of the reservoir so I ...

How old is your power steering fluid? Have you ever changed it? Does it groan on hard left, or hard right turns, or cold engine start ups? I recently did a "Turkey Baster" treatment. I removed as much as I could out of the reservoir, I got about 10oz out. I replaced it with ATF fluid as the owners manual states. Drove the car for 1 week, then removed another 10oz, refilled with fresh ATF fluid....

Can't find synthetic anywhere. I've been to a gazillion auto stores. Nobody carries it or says they can order. If I switch back, any advice on what to use? I previously used Valvoline Synpower, but as we know, its now discontinued. Any advice is welcomed. Thanx!

How can you tell that PSF needs to be changed? My dealer is claiming that my PSF is "dirty" and needs to be changed. The car has about 23K miles on it (2008 Honda Civic). The owner's manual doesn't give any requirements, other than to check the level periodically. I think the Honda website somewhere says to go by the dealer recommendation. Until this car, I've avoided power ...

Where'd my power steering fluid go? 2008 AWD MT EX 18,000 miles Auto started it today and came out 10 minutes later to hear it making a weird sound. WTF?!?! Sound is very similar to the famous Ford power steering pump sound. I get in, turn the wheel a bit, sure as $&*@, the power steering pump is growling. ...

Even BMW dealers pressure their reps/techs to sell sell sell. They love the over-the-phone sale to the guy who has like 90 seconds at work to make a decision to spend another 29.95 on his precious 335i. Of course he is going to say "yes" often enough to make the 90 second investment in the call worth it. They know the math: If 8% say 'yes', then it's worth investing a little time to make ...

the baster method is very similer to the "professional" method. at ford we use a bg chemical machine. first we ad a cleaner to the resivore, turn the wheels lock to lock for ten minutes. then you suck out and add new fluid with the hose from the machine. i never had a groan, but i did the flush about 2 weeks ago, and it go even quiter.

I had the same sort of issue last winter. I thought if there was a leak I would see it in the snow but alas there was nothing. I put fluid in twice and then it stopped leaking and hasn't done it again yet. Did it heal itself or was it zombies stealing the fluid while I was sleeping?

I'm sure to change out the rack on one of these w/b over $1000 so to not inject a few fresh ozs. of new fluid at oil change is just crazy. I do it all the time and any used vehicle I've bought always had brownish fluid in there.

To suck out the old fluid I might just use my wifes turkey baster..........she'll never know. Also I saw one of those Saturday car shows on TV today. They were doing some kind of roadster rebuild. The show was partly sponsored by SeaFoam. (I didnt know that product in some form has been around since the early 30's?) Anyway, they suggested to put some in the power steering fluid. Not much....

If you look on the power steering reservoir cap, it will say "Dextron Type ATF." This means you could use any compatible fluid. My personal recommended is the Amsoil ATF
