Hi All, Tiling onto marine ply around a range heating system, the current tiles (10x20) are coming away. Apparently the adhesive used was heat resistant, yet was only put on 6 mths ago and are already coming away. There are hot pipes in one corner, closest to where the tiles are coming away. John, get a biscuit jointer and you'll soon be making strong joints quickly and accurately, and get to keep most of your fingers into the bargain.

Priming is a good idea. If you are getting ribs showing through it is a very light colored product and should use a white thinset. Maybe try going a bit wetter on the mix to get a full contact and then you won't have that problem. All stone should be back buttered before applying anyways and that gets rid of the rib problem also.

Figures for plywood will be relatively consistent as will spruce. But balsa varies wildly from super light to almost too dense to float. No other wood known has the range of density that balsa has. To better simulate that in your CAD I'd enter in 3 balsa types. Figure 6 to 7 lb's per cu foot for the lightest hobby shop wood you'll find, 9 lbs per cubic foot for medium and 11 lbs for ...

A second vote for the plywood. With the load you get from books, anything more that 24" of unsupported shelf will bend if made from MDF. Jaybee
