Observatory Hill. It has a dense core, with commercial space and very few businesses. If it had a coffee shop and a cafe or two, it would be perfect. There's a view and lots of cheap housing, right next to Riverview Park.

In answer to your questions, yes, yes, yes, and yes. I think you would find Pittsburgh to your liking. The East End neighborhoods (Shadyside, Squirrel Hill, Point Breeze, Regent Square, Highland Park) have a good percentage of gay people of all ages, there are good restaurants, walkable neighborhoods, good public transportation, nice parks, good shopping, grocery stores, and book stores. ...

The thing is that, while Pittsburgh may not be your cup of tea, it's really no different than a lot of similar cities. It's got amenities that people generally look for--there are nice neighborhoods with good school districts.
