Advertisements [ ? ] Edited on Tue Jul-08-08 11:23 AM by underpants Busting the CRP Taxpayers spent $35 billion on the Conservation Reserve Program. But once-in-a-lifetime grain prices put that ground into play--and soil-saving gains at risk. High prices will push more acres out of the CRP. Iowa State suggests that, short of an overhaul, 20 million acres may...

Personally I think they hype up the importance of CRP for nesting when I think it's greater importance is winter cover. We are one bad winter away with less and less CRP cover from a pheasant population crash. I'm no upland game biologist but I base that I think on what I see in February when the snow is a foot deep and the wind is blowing. S.D. Pheasant Counts Up Again ...

We raised these birds together this summer to free them to the wild. Well, they seem to like our home and we are enjoying them tremendously. The chukars are quite humorous. We have just 3 acres on a hillside at about 1200 feet. We live in Oregon, USA, with lots of rainfall and some snow in the winter time. We leave food and water out for the birds and they've hung around for at least a ...

A neighbor belongs to the Pheasants Forever organization. He started out in the Spring with around 70 chicks that he planed on raising and releasing in the Fall or late Summer. Last week he asked me if I would take some of the young pheasants, keep them for around a week then release them on my place so they would stay in an area away from his place. I ended up with 9 birds, 2 roosters and 7 ...

Waders, you are so correct!! What about the loss of crp to giving the winter cover for wildlife? Great question for the survey next year. What is the standard method of counting for this survey? Do you think they come up with this number just for the out of state hunters ads to get them to come to South Dakota? I think there will be a very cold winter coming and there will be a loss of...
