I was on my way home...(ironically for this post in a long line of traffic)....listening to NPR discussions on the climate summit and had the following thought. Why is per capita carbon emissions one of the measurement yardsticks in the discussion? In some sense at least the per capita measurement rewards countries that are overpopulated by creating a larger denominator....

MOST Ph.Ds - Awesome to hear! But what has that done for Tonga? Honestly ask yourself - With The amount of Doctorate degrees Tonga has, Has it LIFTED THE STATE OF LIVING IN TONGA? Yes?...No?...How?....Where? In my opinion - Its VERY hard to see any improvement. Every trip to my beautiful Kingdom I see a part of its beauty and culture deminish.

Maybe the part reason why they have fewer homicides and suicides is because they can afford to go to the doctor to get counseling and treatment for their emotional problems. Or are actually able to afford the anti-depressant or anti-psychotic medication prescribed to them. Either way, the big issue isn't a few extra years of life, its paying twice as much for a less reliable service. ...

Here is a better measure. Energy use per capita for all states. I think this measure has little to do with how profligate energy users are the individuals living in those states and a lot to do with how the individuals earn their living. Secondarily, the climate also affects energy use. Some industries, like oil extraction and refining consume LOTS of energy. Others, like software ...

There are multiple reasons.
